TDLR Electrician Renewal: Complete Guide to Texas License Renewal

Professional electrician reviewing license renewal requirements

Keep your electrical license active with timely renewal

Renewing your Texas electrician license with TDLR requires completing continuing education and submitting your renewal on time. Whether you hold a residential wireman, journeyman, or master electrician license, understanding the renewal process ensures you stay compliant and avoid lapses in your licensing status.

Renewal Requirements

All Texas electrician licenses require annual renewal with TDLR. Here's what you need:

  • 4 Hours of Continuing Education: Complete TDLR-approved CE annually
  • Current License Number: Have your TDLR electrician license number ready
  • Renewal Fee: Pay the applicable TDLR renewal fee online
  • On-Time Submission: Renew before your license expiration date

Renewal Timeline

Texas electrician licenses expire annually on the licensee's birthday. Plan ahead to avoid late penalties:

  • 60 days before expiration: Complete your CE requirement
  • 30 days before expiration: Submit renewal application to TDLR
  • Renewal opens 90 days before your expiration date
  • Late renewals incur additional fees and may require reinstatement

CE Requirements by License Type

All electrician license types require 4 hours of continuing education:

  • Residential Wireman: 4 hours CE, focusing on NEC updates and safety
  • Journeyman Electrician: 4 hours CE, covering code changes and OSHA compliance
  • Master Electrician: 4 hours CE, including advanced electrical topics
  • Maintenance Electrician: 4 hours CE, relevant to industrial maintenance

Online Renewal Process

Renewing your license through TDLR's online portal is quick and convenient:

  • Log in to your TDLR account at www.tdlr.texas.gov
  • Navigate to "Renew My License" section
  • Enter your CE completion certificate information
  • Pay renewal fee with credit card or electronic check
  • Receive confirmation and updated license immediately

Common Renewal Mistakes to Avoid

Don't let these common issues delay your renewal:

  • Waiting until the last minute to complete CE
  • Using non-TDLR approved CE providers
  • Entering incorrect license numbers on CE certificates
  • Forgetting to pay renewal fees after submitting CE

What Happens If Your License Expires

Working with an expired license is illegal in Texas. If your license lapses, you must stop electrical work immediately and complete the reinstatement process, which includes late fees and potentially additional requirements.

TDLR Renewal Account: Step-by-Step Process

Many electricians complete their CE but then aren't sure how to actually submit the renewal to TDLR. Here's the full account-based process:

  1. Complete your CE first. You cannot submit a renewal through the TDLR portal without a CE completion record on file. When you finish with All American Tradesman CE, we report your CE to TDLR the same day — so it will appear in your portal record automatically.
  2. Log in to your TDLR MyLicense Office account. If you don't have one, create a free account at tdlr.texas.gov. You'll need your license number and a valid email address.
  3. Navigate to "Renew My License." The portal will show your current license status and confirm whether your CE requirement has been satisfied. If our submission went through (same-day), you should see it reflected here.
  4. Pay the renewal fee. As of the 2026 fee schedule, TDLR electrician license renewal fees are $57 for most license types. Master Electrician renewal is $57; Journeyman is $57; Residential Wireman is $57. Check the TDLR fee schedule page for the most current amounts, as fees can be updated by the legislature.
  5. Print or save your renewed license. Upon payment, your license is renewed instantly and the updated license document is available immediately in your portal.

Late Renewal and Grace Periods

TDLR provides a 90-day late renewal window after a license expires. During this period, you can renew by paying the standard renewal fee plus a late fee equal to 1.5× the original renewal fee. After the 90-day window, the license is no longer eligible for late renewal — you must apply for reinstatement, which involves additional fees and, in some cases, re-examination requirements.

The safest approach: complete your CE at least 30 days before your license expiration date. This gives you time to address any issues with your TDLR account before the deadline.

How Long Does Online Electrician CE Take?

Our 4-hour TDLR-approved CE course is self-paced. Most electricians complete it in a single session of 3–5 hours (the minimum seat time is 4 hours, but review time and quizzes add a bit). You can also pause and resume — your progress is saved automatically. There is no time limit to complete the course, and you can stop and come back at any time before your license expires.
