Who Must Complete Texas Electrician CE
The 4-hour CE requirement applies to every active Texas electrical license type regulated by TDLR. If you hold any of the following, you need annual CE to renew:
- Master Electrician — responsible for all permitted electrical work at a job site
- Journeyman Electrician — performs electrical work under supervision of a Master
- Residential Wireman — licensed for residential wiring only
- Residential Appliance Installer — licensed for appliance connections only
- Sign Electrician — licensed for electrical sign installations
- Maintenance Electrician — licensed to maintain existing electrical systems
Each of these requires the same 4-hour TDLR-approved CE course — the content covers all of these license types, so one course satisfies the requirement regardless of which you hold.
NEC Updates in the Texas Electrician CE Course
The National Electrical Code (NEC) is updated on a 3-year cycle by the NFPA. Texas adopts the NEC updates through the TDLR rulemaking process. The current electrician CE requirement includes 1.5 hours specifically on NEC updates — covering recent code changes that affect wiring methods, conductor sizing, GFCI/AFCI requirements, and equipment grounding. For a deeper look at what changed in the latest NEC, see our post on NEC Code Updates for 2025.
