Who Must Complete Texas HVAC/ACR CE

The 8-hour CE requirement applies to every active Texas ACR license type regulated by TDLR. If you hold any of the following, you need annual CE to renew:

  • ACR Contractor — Class A — unlimited BTU capacity, commercial and residential
  • ACR Contractor — Class B — limited to residential and light commercial systems
  • Technician Registration — performs HVAC/ACR work under a licensed contractor

All three license types require the same 8-hour course, which must include at least 1 hour covering Texas ACR laws and rules. Our course meets this requirement in full.

What the Texas Law and Rules Requirement Covers

TDLR mandates that 1 of your 8 CE hours specifically address Texas-specific HVAC/ACR laws and regulations. This portion of the course covers the Texas Occupations Code provisions governing air conditioning and refrigeration, TDLR enforcement procedures, permit requirements for ACR installations, and recent regulatory changes. This isn't just a legal formality — knowing the Texas-specific rules protects you from costly compliance violations.

EPA 608 and Texas ACR: Two Separate Requirements

A common question from new ACR contractors: does the TDLR CE course cover EPA 608 certification? The answer is no — they are separate credentials. Your TDLR license renewal CE covers regulatory updates to EPA refrigerant handling rules (which are included in our 3-hour refrigerant module), but EPA 608 certification itself must be obtained through an EPA-approved certifier. Both must remain current to legally purchase and handle regulated refrigerants. See our post on Refrigerant Regulations in Texas 2025 for the latest on AIM Act phase-downs.
